Taoyuan County launches Taiwan’s first skywalk

July 01, 2011

Taiwan’s first glass-bottomed skywalk, set to open this month in Taoyuan, will help the county become a major tourism destination and center for breathtaking thrills, according to county Magistrate Wu Chih-yang June 30.

“The project was partly inspired by the Grand Canyon Skywalk,” Wu said, referring to the unique cantilever observation deck perched 1,219 meters above the Colorado River in the U.S. state of Arizona.

According to Wu, Taoyuan’s NT$8 million (US$278,000) skywalk will allow visitors to enjoy spectacular views of Xiao Wulai Waterfall in Fuxing Township and the surrounding hills.

“The skywalk is sure to become a major tourist attraction on the North Cross-Island Highway,” Wu said.

The 11-meter-long structure, which took six months to construct, is suspended 70 meters above the ground and can hold up to 40 visitors at one time, according to Taoyuan County Government officials.

In addition to the skywalk, the Xiao Wulai Scenic Area boasts a range of geological wonders including a 20-ton balance rock and tranquil forest trails, officials said.

The Taoyuan County skywalk opens July 2 with the price of admission NT$50.
